What's it like to advise with me?
My training as a comic improviser regularly surfaces in my advising sessions and it’s not unusual to find me role playing with clients, providing mock interviews aimed at enhancing interpersonal skills and empowering them to make a first class impression. As an advisor, I work efficiently to identify and clarify a client’s goals and immediate needs so that we can work together to design a plan of action. My advisees have won professional development competitions (2012 IDEA Competition: IU Kelley School of Business), and have landed full-time positions at Florida State University, Interlochen Center for the Arts, Spokane Public Radio, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
Career advising and guiding students and clients to transform ideas into opportunities is at the heart of my experience. Since 2007, I’ve worked extensively in planning and programming professional development events for students, and from 2010-2012, I had the pleasure of shaping and leading Project Jumpstart, an innovative career development & music entrepreneurship program at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (JSoM). While there, I introduced regular drop-in career advising services for JSoM’s 1,400+ students and regularly counseled students and alumni of diverse musical disciplines and cultures.
There I worked closely with a diverse roster of faculty members and administrators at JSoM to present 25 high impact student workshops aimed at self promotion, social media, and networking. At JSoM, I also developed and led interactive students workshops including Your Story, Your CV and B.YO.bio. My repeat programming included CV, resume and cover letter preparation workshops, which I also shared via webinar to students at Montana State University. There I created and presented a series of arts entrepreneurship residencies, featuring music entrepreneurship specialists, David Cutler (author of The Savvy Musician) and Jeffrey Nytch, composer and arts entrepreneurship consultant. Another JSoM highlight was assembling a team of student leaders. Together we worked to introduce a series of music entrepreneurship competitions aimed at encouraging students to promote their innovative projects.
